Kevin Rolain - Strategic Advisor, BDO
Kevin is a Strategic Advisor in the Profit Enhancement Solutions group, a division of BDO USA, LLP. He is a senior manager who helps businesses improve profitability and sales growth by using the 80/20 principle to uncover their key value drivers, focus resources in those strategic areas, and eliminate activities that don’t add value. He is recognized for his operational excellence with a strong focus on process standardization reducing complexity and improving overall profitability.
Kevin spent more than 22 years of his career working in industry where he was Chief Operating Officer (COO) for several manufacturing businesses. As COO of Dowco, Inc, he led the company-wide implementation of the 80/20 management system and organized the business into discreet segments with dedicated teams to create greater focus and exceed strategic goals and objectives.
Val Laufenberg - Management & Technology Advisory Services, BDO
Val began her accounting career at Smith & Gesteland in 2004 and came to BDO in 2018 when Smith & Gesteland joined the firm as part of an expansion. Her driven personality and desire to make a difference helped her to quickly work her way up to become a partner. Currently, Val leads the Profit Enhancement Solutions Group where she is responsible for overseeing sales, client projects, and the general management of the practice.
Val focuses on the development of strategic plans and working with her clients to set individual financial goals. She has had a great deal of success applying her vast knowledge of the 80/20 Rule to show clients how they can focus on the areas of their business that will maximize profits. Val also utilizes the Zero-Based Budget method to provide clients with a detailed look at their costs.
Passionate about helping clients achieve their goals, Val works with businesses to develop their team, understand the profitable areas of their business, and improve strategies through segmentation. Specifically, she assisted a company struggling with succession and economic recession.
Val helped them build a management team and focus the business on its core work, which resulted in the business meeting its transition goals, and growing the bottom line 59% in the first year and 88% the second year. In another instance, she helped a business struggling to break-even raise their bottom line 17% in one year by segmenting the business and aligning the teams.
In addition to being a licensed CPA, Val holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree. She often speaks at various community events including WMEP’s Manufacturing Matters, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the Rotary, CEO groups, the Construction Resource Network, and many corporate events.
